Krishna Janmashtami is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, who is considered one of the most revered and significant deities in Hinduism. It is observed on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the Hindu lunar month of Bhadrapada, which typically falls in August or September of the Gregorian calendar. The festival is also known as Janmashtami, Sri Krishna Jayanti or Gokulashtami.

Here’s a breakdown of the significance and customs associated with Krishna Janmashtami:

Birth of Lord Krishna: Krishna is believed to be the eighth avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu, one of the principal deities in Hinduism. He is considered a divine figure who came to Earth to restore dharma (righteousness) and guide humanity to a better way of life. Krishna was born in Mathura to King Vasudeva and Queen Devaki in a prison cell, and his birth marked the end of the oppressive rule of King Kansa, his maternal uncle.

Fasting and Vigils: Devotees observe a day-long fast leading up to midnight, the supposed time of Krishna’s birth. Many temples conduct bhajan (devotional song) and kirtan (singing and dancing) sessions throughout the night. People stay awake and engage in devotional activities, reciting hymns, reading sacred texts, and sharing stories about Krishna’s life.

Dahi Handi: In the state of Maharashtra and some other regions, a popular tradition known as “Dahi Handi” takes place. It involves creating human pyramids to break a pot (handi) filled with curd or buttermilk that is hung at a significant height. This reenacts Krishna’s childhood habit of stealing butter and curd from pots hung from the ceiling.

Decorations: Homes and temples are beautifully decorated with flowers, colorful rangoli (decorative patterns made with colored powders or flowers), and pictures or idols of Lord Krishna. Cradles are often adorned with flowers and jewelry, symbolizing the birth of the infant Krishna.

Devotional Songs and Dance: Devotees sing bhajans (devotional songs) dedicated to Lord Krishna and perform traditional dances like the Raas Leela, a reenactment of Krishna’s playful dances with the gopis (cowherd girls).

Midnight Celebration: The main highlight of Krishna Janmashtami is the midnight celebration, marking the exact time of Krishna’s birth. Temples and homes echo with prayers, ringing of bells, and blowing of conch shells at this moment. The idol of the infant Krishna is bathed, dressed in new clothes, and placed in a beautifully decorated cradle.

Prasad: Special dishes, sweets, and fruits are prepared as offerings to Lord Krishna. Popular dishes include makhan (butter), poha (flattened rice), and a variety of sweets like panjiri, kheer, and laddoos. After the midnight celebration, these offerings, called “prasad,” are distributed among devotees.

Krishna Janmashtami is not only a religious celebration but also a cultural and social event. It brings people together to celebrate the life and teachings of Lord Krishna, emphasizing love, devotion, and the triumph of good over evil. The festival holds great significance for Hindus and is celebrated with enthusiasm and joy in various parts of India and among Hindu communities worldwide.

Lord Krishna’s teachings in the Bhagavad Gita and other texts are filled with profound wisdom. Here are a few notable quotes attributed to Lord Krishna:

“You have the right to perform your prescribed duties, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions.”
Bhagavad Gita 2.47

“Whenever there is a decline in righteousness and an increase in unrighteousness, O Arjuna, at that time I manifest myself on earth.”
Bhagavad Gita 4.7

“I am time, the great destroyer of the world, and I have come here to destroy all people.”
Bhagavad Gita 11.32

“In the material world, one who is unaffected by whatever good or evil he may obtain, neither praising it nor despising it, is firmly fixed in perfect knowledge.”
Bhagavad Gita 6.7

“The soul is neither born, and nor does it die.”
Bhagavad Gita 2.20

“The senses are so strong and impetuous, O Arjuna, that they forcibly carry away the mind even of a man of discrimination who is endeavoring to control them.”
Bhagavad Gita 2.60

“I am the source of all spiritual and material worlds. Everything emanates from Me. The wise who know this perfectly engage in My devotional service and worship Me with all their hearts.”
Bhagavad Gita 10.8

“I am the goal, the sustainer, the master, the witness, the abode, the refuge, and the most dear friend. I am the creation and the annihilation, the basis of everything, the resting place, and the eternal seed.”
Bhagavad Gita 9.18

“A person can rise through the efforts of his own mind; he can also degrade himself in the same manner. Because each person is his own friend or enemy in either the material or spiritual arena by his own free will.”
Bhagavad Gita 6.5-6

“Perform your obligatory duties, because action is indeed better than inaction.”
Bhagavad Gita 3.8

These quotes reflect the essence of Lord Krishna’s teachings on various aspects of life, spirituality, duty, and self-realization, as found in the Bhagavad Gita and other sacred texts of Hinduism. They continue to inspire and guide people on their spiritual journeys and in their daily lives.
